Focus on Creativity
Great ways to measure development in music is to constantly monitor a student's creative abilities such as their ability to improvise (spontaneously create coherent musical ideas in the moment), compose (create music of different styles), arrange/orchestrate music (manipulate musical ideas through different instruments) or produce music with a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
NO Music Exams
Music examinations overemphasize rote memorization and performance to the detriment of musical understanding and creativity. Memorizing a difficult piece is not as useful to a budding musician as learning how to compose a piece or improvise. We believe in developing musical understanding so the student is able to create music at a high level, first and foremost.
